Chapter Twenty-Two

THURSDAY, AUGUST 13

The fair did not have a roller coaster, yet Kara felt like she had ridden one last night. They’d had fun, the ride dizzying yet thrilling, and gotten to talking seriously, even through Danny’s blue mouth. The thought warmed her cheeks. Then he got the phone call, and it was like a switch had been flicked in his demeanor. Had he been embarrassed about Hannah? If so, she tried to assure him that there was nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. He had come down hard on himself, yes, but somehow, he made Kara feel like she had done something wrong. It was senior year all over again. But Kara had learned from that experience. Just like Danny should have. She knew he wasn’t the same person. And she wasn’t going to let him revert to his old ways.

Kara had spent the better part of the day helping Dad clean up his shop. It pained him to not work on something, more so than the surgery had, so Kara suggested a compromise. Cleaning was at least productive yet not too strenuous. It also gave him more practice with the crutches.

His desire to get back to work was understandable. Kara had started the day running errands for Mom, then researching everything she could about PhotoStyle Magazine. The more she looked into it, the more she…didn’t know. Was it the right place for her? Should she accept that anywhere that would take her was the right place? Would they even take her? Marcus hadn’t secured an interview yet. It could be worrying for nothing.

Helping Dad got her mind off both the job situation and the Danny situation, at least for a little while. Kara swept the debris away from the far corners of the shop, making piles as she worked her way toward the center. “Dad?”

“Yep?” He polished the circular saw with a dry cloth.

“Is it me or is it a lot cleaner in here than usual?” She had helped him in the summers as a teen and thought the sawdust was endless. But maybe Dad had gotten better about tidying up more frequently.

“Yeah…well, we aren’t getting the orders in like we used to. It’s mostly the old folks like me and your mother who appreciate this kind of thing. The younger kids want something quick to assemble. Cheap stuff from China.”

Kara looked around, really studied the shop. Organized stacks of hickory, cherry, and oak lined the south wall. The machinery was nearly impeccable already, and other than the sailboat hull in the back, there was only one piece in her dad’s work corner waiting to be finished.

“Are you guys doing all right? I mean, financially?” It was odd to talk to him like…like an adult. As a kid, the business was something more of a nuisance, something that took up Dad’s time and caused her and Mom to argue all the time, since Kara wanted nothing to do with it.

“Ah, we’re getting by. You know, we had planned on being retired by now.
